Artist's Statement

I first picked up my parents’ heavy manual Nikon when I was 16. I’ll never forget the weight of that camera, the sound of its shutter, and the pure joy of foraging and hunting for my subjects.

For me, taking photographs is a way to understand the world. It is a meditative process, offering me the ability to see something or someone in a different way. With my camera in hand, I feel removed from all those things that usually crowd the mind, and through photography I hope to help people feel grounded and peaceful, and perhaps, even, to feel more connected to their past.

I am passionate about capturing images of nature and architecture, whether I’m on a long walk in the woods or on the busy streets of New York City. Children are also a significant subject in my work. I enjoy their light-heartedness, their innocence, and their loving nature.

I find the timeless quality of black and white photographs to be powerful and moving. I prefer to work in a digital format with my Nikon, though I sometimes take pictures with my mobile phone. I love the spontaneity of these photographs. Letting go of rigid formats using a simple phone camera is an effortless way for me to gain an awareness of my surroundings, and I like the slightly blurry non-perfection of those shots. But no matter which kind of camera I use, I appreciate the un-posed, relaxed feel of simple photographs, and I am excited by not knowing what I will encounter, what will move me to reach for my camera, and what I will capture when I finally click the shutter.
